Position Overview

CDM Smith is on the lookout for an Application Architect to become part of our Digital Engineering Solutions team. This role is integrated within the Development group of the Digital Engineering Solutions team and focuses on the design and implementation of cloud-based solutions that promote CI/CD practices. The successful candidate will employ infrastructure as code (IaC) tools and ensure a cohesive collaboration between software development and operations teams.

The ideal applicant should demonstrate critical thinking, proactive engagement and a keen interest in exploring and applying innovative technologies and methodologies. A strong aptitude for developing solutions for architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) initiatives that leverage advanced technologies is essential.

As a key player in the Digital Engineering Solutions team, the Development group will also be involved in research and development efforts, offering guidance and oversight to AEC practices at CDM Smith. This includes engaging in new product research, conducting testing and nurturing innovative ideas that emerge throughout the company.

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of application architecture encompassing security, scalability, integration and application migration, coupled with a commitment to ongoing improvement and a drive to achieve measurable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assume project ownership while functioning independently in a collaborative team environment and mentoring team members as necessary.
  • Deliver architectural blueprints and technical specifications to serve as a framework for software developers, ensuring adherence to software architecture principles. Design, develop and implement comprehensive integrated systems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, software developers, operations teams and other IT professionals to devise and implement projects.
  • Provide expertise on business process implications, risk assessment, cost-benefit analysis and available system options.
  • Create prototypes and evaluate risks through analysis of applications for diverse use cases.
  • Oversee the development lifecycle from initiation to completion, ensuring compliance with established standards and best practices.
  • Continuously monitor adherence to the company’s security and performance criteria to maintain software integrity and prevent potential security vulnerabilities.
  • Analyze storyboards, wireframes, mock-ups and preliminary prototypes, transforming them into functional solutions.
  • Estimate the required resources and skills needed to support the project, as well as the effort needed to fulfill the proposed scope.
  • Assess project requirements and select the hardware and software frameworks that align with the project objectives.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Proficient in multiple programming languages, cloud frameworks and tools with a solid foundation in application architecture and a thorough understanding of various cloud service providers.
  • Familiar with design patterns and system architectures to ensure compliance with industry best practices in application development.
  • Knowledgeable about data privacy and security regulations.
  • Experienced with various authentication protocols commonly utilized in enterprise-level security services.
  • Possess critical thinking and problem-solving skills to evaluate complex challenges and craft solutions that meet client requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as the ability to create diagrams for clients, stakeholders and team members.
  • Demonstrated capability in team leadership and management including mentoring and guiding junior developers to manage the development process, meet project deadlines and adhere to budget constraints.
  • Understanding of network security principles including firewall configurations, gateways and inbound/outbound traffic protocols.
  • Capable of establishing development guidelines and processes for the team including coding standards, quality assurance and branding best practices according to project needs.
  • Proficient in DevOps practices, data management and infrastructure pipeline management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience may be accepted in lieu of a college degree.

Travel Requirements

Domestic and/or international travel may be required with frequency contingent upon specific duties, responsibilities and the essential functions of the position, varying based on workload and project demands.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert AZ-304/AZ-500.
  • Bachelor’s degree in software development, engineering or a related field is preferred.

Background Check and Drug Testing Policy

CDM Smith Inc. and its divisions and subsidiaries reserve the right to require background checks including criminal history, employment verification, education credentials, licensing, etc., as well as credit and motor vehicle checks when applicable for specific roles.
